George Jones 1931-2013

Country legend, George Jones passed away in the Vanderbilt Medical Centre in Nashville on 26th April after a short illness.  Nicknamed The Possum, George recorded more than 150 albums during his life and had US No.1 hits in each of five decades of his career.  Married four times, he recorded several duets with his third wife, Tammy Wynette, the most famous one being "Golden Ring".  Tributes have poured in from the many singers  he has influenced, in country and other genres of music.  George won two Grammy awards and was elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992.  The world of country music will miss him greatly, but his legacy remains in the many songs he left behind for fans to enjoy. Glasgow's Grand Ole Opry conveys our condolences to his family.   R.I.P.George.

Country Music Needs More Support

With bands folding all too often these days it is increasingly urgent for  country music fans to support the clubs and bands still in existence. The Opry offers members free admission on a Saturday evening for the payment of just one extra pound on a Friday evening.  You can't get better than that - two nights of live entertainment for just £5 !  If you know of any members who haven't been at the club for a while, why not encourage them to come along again to enjoy the music, dancing and keenly-priced drinks from the bar !  Since the start of 2012 the club has been well-attended on Saturdays, and Fridays have also picked up which is encouraging in these straitened economic times.  Visiting parties (birthdays, hen and stag nights, etc) have helped to swell the figures but we also need the members to support the club as much as possible.   Spread the news among your friends and neighbours that the Opry offers a great night out - the number of visiting parties demonstrates that it is seen as a fun venue and is somewhere a bit different to celebrate an event.   The Opry can be hired for private functions too - even wedding receptions - at very competitive prices.l

Inductees to the Country Music Hall of Fame 2012

Congratulations to Pig Robbins, Connie Smith and Garth Brooks who were all inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this year.  Among the most sought after session musicians in country music history, Hargos Pig Robbins has played piano on hundreds of hits since he first began working in Nashville studios in the late 1950s.  Among his credits are such recordings as George Jones 's White Lightning, Charlie Rich's Behind Closed Doors and Crystal Gayle's Don't it make your Brown Eyes Blue. Connie Smith's first single, Once a Day, in 1964 was a No.1 hit for 8 weeks.  Discovered by Bill Anderson at a talent contest in Columbia, she  released her 53rd album last year.  Married to fellow country artist, Marty Stuart, she had a series of hits in the 60s and 70s, as well as being successful in movies and television.  Garth Brooks has one of the most astounding and important musical careers in American history.  At age 50 he is one of the youngest living inductees and he is not finished yet.  He has sold more albums than Michael Jackson.  Garth himself thought his induction premature given the long list of others he believes should be in there before him.
